How to Pick a Work Watch

October 06, 2017

In the corporate environment where it’s easy to get sucked into ensembles duller than dishwater, it’s the little things that make a difference, such as your work watch. Here’s a detailed guide to help you pick the right work watch and 3 rules on how to style it with your work outfit.

Signature Features of a Work Watch

Size

A work watch should easily slip in and out of your dress shirt cuff. It is typically thin and sleek, with a thickness of 15 millimeters or less. In terms of diameter, formal watches belong to the smaller end of the spectrum of men’s watches, ideally between 36-40mm.

Case

The case of a work watch can come in several shapes; it may be circular, rectangular, or square. However, the more unusual the shape, the more casual the watch will look. Material-wise, high-end varieties are typically made from precious metals like gold or silver. If it is made from steel, plastic, or other materials (ceramic, titanium, carbon fiber, etc.), it’s unlikely to be a formal watch.

Face

Think minimalist and traditional. The dial should be simple and elegant with minimal complications such as additional sub dials for time zone distinctions or chronograph capabilities. At most, your work watch can afford a date window and/or a moon display. However, a work watch should preferably only display simple hour indexes (the numbers, or symbols for numbers) on the watch face such as saber-style indexes (those little lines), Roman numerals, or small Arabic numerals.

Band

Though some companies offer both leather and metal band options with their formal watches, leather is the dressier and more classic way to go. At the highest levels of formality, you want a watch that is conservative, not ostentatious. Hence, a slim and glossy leather band is preferred to a metal one. In less formal occasions, leather bands also offer a more comfortable attitude, slightly more approachable than a stern band of solid metal.
